There is so much stress in our world today. Most people don’t like their present circumstances and wish for something different. They don’t want what they have; they want what they don’t have. This creates a gap that is called anxiety or stress. This cycle is repeated many times in the course of the day and this takes a toll on the body.
How do we change this cycle of stress? We start by accepting the present moment as it is. We create space for the universe to flow into our actions. There is quality in what we do because our action is not a means to an end but is an end in itself–and it is done with great care and attention. Eckhart Tolle says that when we look upon what we do or where we are as the purpose of our life, we negate time and therefore we negate the ego. In other words, joy flows into what we do because it is done in a state of freedom. It then follows that whatever we do, we will be doing exceedingly well because consciousness flows into our actions.
Let’s say you are a cashier at the supermarket. When you feel the presence in your body, you watch the events happening to you and around you without getting entangled with them. You bring awareness into your dealings with customers. You don’t judge other people –you let them be. They will feel this new consciousness and interpret it as liking you. They want to be around you. If a challenging situation happens, you will be compelled to do the right thing because you are not defending yourself but letting the universe work through you. You have aligned yourself with the universe instead of your ego. If before you were an average cashier, now you have become a great cashier. Such is the power of presence!
