Eckhart Tolle says that there are three things to do when confronted with a problematic situation: change it, leave it, or accept it. Everything else is madness. The mind has rigid demands and expectations that it wants the world and other people to fulfill. However, the world and other people, which are in constant flux, can not do that. This creates a pain gap that leads to intense suffering, depression, nervous breakdown, etc. Instead of wanting the world to be different, why not let the world be and see what happens? Why not just observe people, things and situations without getting entangled with them? Why not allow the universe to work its magic?
For example, you moved to a big city to take a new job. At first you were happy. You made it (or so it seems). Then you find out that there is constant bickering, backstabbing, and complaining among your co-workers. Everybody wants to be promoted so everybody is fighting for power. There is constant turf wars. You work hard, stay late, meet your deadlines, and eliminate waste to save the company money. You detest your co-worker next door who is a slacker; who comes in late and leaves early and talks on the phone all day. You believe you will get the promotion. To your surprise, disbelief and consternation, your co-w0rker was promoted because he hangs out with the bosses and plays golf with them. You now report to the slacker, who gives you more work so he can play all day. This is a problematic situation that causes you a great deal of pain and suffering.
Here’s a thought: instead of resisting the situation and getting worked up about it, why not deal with it directly? You can change the situation by asking human resources for a transfer to another department. If a transfer is not possible, you can resign and look for another job. If a transfer or resignation is not possible, the only thing left for you to do is to accept the situation. At first this is hard to do because because it seems like you are in a dark place. Just stay with the feeling until you feel the space around the situation. You may feel a certain lightness or tingling sensation in your body. This means you have transmuted your suffering into joy. That is the purpose of a limit situation. It cracks the hard shell of the ego to create space for something wonderful to happen. You have surrendered and allowed the universe to love you and care for you. Things may or may not change but they no longer hold sway over you. Miracles happen when you surrender. Try it now.
